Canyon High To Host Memorial For Deputy Devin Freeman On Saturday

Deputy Devin Freeman of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station passed away on Thursday, Nov. 28, but those he served as a William S. Hart District resource officer are honoring his legacy this Saturday.

Freeman was the resource deputy for Sierra Vista Junior High and Canyon High School in Canyon Country.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held for him at the Canyon High gymnasium on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

The event is open to the public, and will start with a procession of patrol vehicles at 2:15 p.m., traveling from the Sheriff’s Station to the high school.

Those who attend are asked to refrain from taking pictures during the service and to use Nadal Street as overflow parking.

Freeman had been battling ocular melanoma for six years. He was 38 at the time of his passing.

He is survived by his his mother, his wife Meghan Freeman and three young girls, as well as other family.

Freeman was remembered by Deputy Josh Dubin as someone with a great sense of humor.

“Talking with Devin was such a great way to start my shift,” he said. “I am very grateful for those times.”

Freeman also had the support of Sierra Vista and Canyon High students and staff throughout his illness.

“He is just a terrific (school resource officer), and just a fantastic human being,” Canyon High Principal Mike Kuhlman said in a previous interview. “All of us here appreciate working with him and love him as a guy.”

In lieu of flowers, Devin had asked that donations be made to the Kimmel Cancer Center in Philadelphia and the research of Dr. Takami Sato.

Checks should be made payable to the “Jefferson Foundation,” with “Kimmel Cancer Center Uveal Melanoma Research Fund” in the memo line.
