Daniel Constantino, 20, of Canyon Country, is due back in court Nov. 26 for charges related to a Sept. 15 attack that sheriff’s deputies believe could be gang-related.
Both victim and the suspect are believed to have ties to gang activity, a Sheriff’s Station official said.
“Whether it was road rage or gang-related, we’re still investigating,” said said Sgt. Dean Currie of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s COBRA unit, “mainly because the victim is still recovering.”
Detectives are accusing the two of being in a dark-colored, late-1990s Chevy Impala that parked alongside a car once the victim parked his vehicle outside the Canyon Crest apartments in Newhall around 8 p.m. that night.
After the car stopped, detectives believe Constantino confronted the victim at the driver’s side door of the victim’s vehicle.
The victim was then stabbed.
Sheriff’s Station deputies have not released who they think was the driver and/or the assailant.
Detectives investigated the scene at Newhall Avenue, near the Canyon Crest Apartments and Highway 14.
Constantino was arrested Sept. 27 at 3:45 p.m., and is now being held at Men’s Central Jail without bail.
There is a hold placed on his bail status by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, according to Sheriff’s Department arrest records.
The severity of the attack is what led detectives to seek an attempted murder charge, Sheriff’s Station officials said after the attack.
“(Assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder) are very close,” said Sgt. Dean Currie of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s COBRA unit. “The difference is intent. We’re going to go with attempted murder because of the severity of the injury.”
The Sheriff’s Station’s COBRA Unit, or Career Offenders Burglary Robbery Assault, is a team of detectives who investigate all juvenile and gang-related crime.
