A Canyon Country man accused of sex crimes against a 13-year-old student at a Catholic school in Sylmar pleaded and was sentenced Wednesday.

Epifanio Nevarez, 58, of Canyon Country, pleaded no contest to charges that he committed lewd and lascivious acts with a St. Didacus School student in his Canyon Country home.

He received a six-year sentence in state prison, and he will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

“The incidents took place at his residence,” according Sgt. Brian Hudson of the Special Victims Bureau. “The victim was an acquaintance of a family member.”

Detectives were not investigating for Nevarez for additional victims at the time the case was filed with the District Attorney’s Office.

Sheriff’s Department deputies shared information on their investigation with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Nevarez was arrested March 4 by Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies after an investigation by the Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Unit.

Nevarez was initially accused of four counts, but with his plea, the other counts were dismissed, according to a court official.

He was arraigned March 6, then held to answer the charges June 11.

He was sentenced by Judge Cynthia Ulfig at Los Angeles Superior Court in San Fernando.
