Eight dogs attended with their handlers to present to kids about what it is like to be a trained dog. More than thirty kids attended Working Dogs at the Canyon Country Library.
The types of dogs ranged from Chihuahuas to Great Danes. The presentation helped raise awareness to the children and their families to be a responsible dog owner.
“This event focused on animals at work and how much they are capable of,” said Shannon Lane, the Children’s Librarian of the Canyon Country Library.
One of the therapy dogs, Summer, is a thirteen year old corgi mixed with Australian Cattle Dog. She was rescued from the Castaic animal shelter and currently visits hospitals and schools year round.
“She loves to be around kids,” said her handler, as Summer patiently sat in her red wagon.
Just like Summer, all of the dogs were trained therapy dogs. Many are a part of the R.E.A.D. program where children can read to the dogs. The goal of the R.E.A.D program is to improve the literacy skills of children with help from therapy teams as literacy mentors.
As the children waited in line to see and pet their favorite dog, the owners were happy to talk about the dogs and the dogs were just as happy to be receiving all of the attention.
