Caltrans will close southbound I-5 in the San Fernando Valley during the construction of a carpool lane Monday night through Wednesday morning.

“The southbound I-5 is going to have a full freeway closure to make sure there is not a bottleneck,” said Claudia Mejia, a spokeswoman for Caltrans.

Construction will occur midnight to 4 a.m. from July 1 through July 3.

Caltrans crews will continue demolishing the portion of the I-5 that connects to SR-170.

The work will require two night closures of southbound I-5 between Osborne Street and Sheldon Street, as well as night closures of southbound I-5 on-ramps at Terra Bella Street and Osborne Street.

The westbound and eastbound SR-118 connectors to southbound I-5 will also be closed.

“However, if motorists are traveling on the 118 and they’re staying on the 118 they should have no problems,” said Mejia.

There will be detours at San Fernando Rd., Laurel Canyon Blvd. and Arleta Ave. Signs will be posted during construction times.

The construction is part of a Caltrans project to create a carpool lane in each direction along I-5 between SR-118 and SR-170.

A carpool lane is also being constructed at the I-5 and SR-170 interchange so drivers can travel from one freeway directly to another without leaving their lane.

This project is expected to improve traffic flow, relieve congestion and encourage ride sharing. The $140 million project  is expected to be completed in late 2014

Caltrans will also open the Gorman Road on-ramp to northbound I-5 on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

This is part of a project to rehabilitate the lanes and outside shoulders of the I-5 in both directions from just south of the Vista Del Lago Road overcrossing to the Kern County line.

Pavement was replaced along the I-5 from Vista Del Lago Road to the Kern County Line in Castaic.

The project is expected to extend the life of the pavement, lessen the need for maintenance and related costs in addition to providing a smoother riding surface.

The $100 million project is expected to be completed in late 2015.
