Cal Arts Center CNP, Trans Arts, And Getty Villa Present "Prometheus Bound"

California Institute of the Arts Center for New Performance is expected to present the archaic Greek drama “Prometheus Bound” in convergence with Trans Arts and the Getty Villa Museum in September.

Getty Villa has a mandate to present a drama from classical antiquity since it has a construction alluding to an ancient Roman villa and features 44,000 Greek, Roman and Etruscan artifacts, according to Getty Villa officials.

“Prometheus Bound” is in itself a classical greek drama centering primarily around the plight of ancient culture hero and protagonist Prometheus, who is delivered to punishment since he obstructed Zeus from decimating the entire human race and giving fire to human beings. His punishment is to be forced to be chained to a rocky mountain in Caucasus.

The production will feature a massive 23-foot-tall, five-ton steel wheel, designed by Cal Arts alumnus and scenic designer Efren Delgadillo Jr that will serve as the symbolic mountain that the titan Prometheus is chained to.

The steel wheel is a requisite factor in the production since it functions as a platform where actors perform. It possesses many thematic implications central to the production.

“There are a lot of interacting meanings of the steel wheel pertinent to the play. The first is it an image of time as a circle and is related to a medieval clock. In a sense, it signifies Prometheus being tied literally to time. At the same time, it relates to an image of destiny,” said Travis Preston, Dean of the Cal Arts School of Theater.

“It additionally symbolizes ‘the Catherine Wheel’ which was St. Catherine of Alexandria’s emblem by which tradition she was tortured. It was distinguished as an instrument of martyrdom. It is a direct symbolism of the suffering and torture Prometheus had to endure, ” according to his statement.

The wheel is kinetic and will be operated and controlled by an actor on set.

From July to the end of the production, the archaic style kinetic steel wheel is expected to serve as an additional attraction to the Getty Villa.

“Prometheus Bound” will run at the Getty Villa’s Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman Theater, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, September 5-28, with previews on August 29-31 at the Getty Villa’s Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman Theater, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, September 5-28, with previews on August 29-31. The Getty Villa is situated at 17985 Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272.

Tickets will go on sale July 1.
