Supporters came together to raise more than $30,000 for the organization at their Fight It! Race in May at Central Park. The race typically involves more than 300 runners. This year, with the help of sponsor Whitening Lightning, the fund will be able to ease the burden of more than 30 young adults, 30 percent more than they were able to help last year.

Typical grants cover $600 worth of costs, including medical insurance, transportation, rent, groceries and other necessities.

After applications open again, the selection committee will review applications on a weekly basis to determine need. The program manager acts on the committee’s recommendations and issues checks directly to service providers, ensuring that the patients’ requests are fulfilled.

About the Brenda Mehling Cancer Fund

The Brenda Mehling Cancer Fund is a Santa Clarita, California-based, all-volunteer organization that supports patients ages 18-40 as they undergo cancer treatment. This fund provides services to meet daily needs that are not covered by insurance.

In early 2003, the BMCF incorporated as a California non-profit.  Later that same year it became a Federal 501(c)(3) non-profit.

Since it was founded by Brenda Mehling in 2001, the fund has provided more than $258,000 in services for 382 young adults across 30 different states. She built it specifically for young adults her age to maintain self-respect during the months of treatment and minimize the financial stresses associated with it.

In February 2004, Brenda lost her second battle against cancer. However, the BMCF continues to realize her vision of a nationwide support organization that helps young adults fight cancer.
