A Santa Clarita teen was involved in a fatal crash Wednesday, which is still under investigation by California Highway Patrol officials.
Andrew A. Reynoso, 18, of Newhall, was killed when the 2001 Toyota Corolla he was driving spun out and was hit by a 2005 Mitsubishi Galant driven by a Lancaster woman.
The collision occurred at 5:04 p.m. on San Francisquito Canyon Road, just north of Lowridge Place, about a mile north of Copper Hill Drive.
Reynoso’s car drifted onto the right shoulder of the road, according to a CHP report, and when the teen tried to steer back on to the road, apparently over-corrected his Corolla.
“The vehicle began to spin in a counter-clockwise rotation,” according to a preliminary CHP report. Reynoso then “steered to the right and the vehicle began to spin in a clockwise rotation while entering the opposing northbound traffic lane.”
Cynthia M. Sheldon, 43, of Lancaster, was travelling northbound about 50-55 mph in her Galant when her car collided with Reynoso’s.
Sheldon “applied her brakes but could not stop,” the report states. “The left side of (Reynoso’s) vehicle at the driver’s side door collided with the front of (Sheldon’s) vehicle.”
Reynoso and Sheldon were transported to Henry Mayo Hospital in Valencia, where Reynoso was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m.
Sheldon escaped with minor injuries.
San Francisquito Canyon Road was temporarily closed to traffic.
The crash remains under investigation by the CHP.
