Assemblyman Steve Fox (D-Palmdale) today announced that Assembly Bills (AB) 588 and 631 have been approved by the State Assembly with broad bipartisan support. The bills address protection of student athletes and enhancing core education for children in juvenile court schools. Both measures passed by a margin of 70-0 and now advance to the Senate.

“Today’s votes were a victory for California youth,” said Fox. “I am glad that my colleagues understand the need to keep kids from all schools as safe as possible from concussions and to keep at-risk youth from falling further behind academically.”

AB 588 would expand current law protecting youth athletes from concussions by including students attending private and charter schools. Education codes now require public schools to provide athletes and their guardians with written information regarding concussions and to remove athletes from play pending evaluation by a healthcare provider if the athlete may have sustained a concussion.

In addition to including private and charter school athletes, all schools also would be required to provide concussion information in a digital format available via email and/or on a school’s web site.

AB 631 would allow for additional English and mathematics classes for children in juvenile court schools to improve student proficiency. Test scores demonstrate many students in juvenile court schools are three or more years below grade level in math and English skills.
