“This art slam focusing on cheese is a little bit different,” said Christina McGoldrick, spokeswoman for the city of Santa Clarita. “It’s a unique opportunity for residents to experience cheese as art. It’s a great mix of food and art, and food as art.”

Artwork scheduled to be on display includes a swiss cheese aluminum sculpture by artist Bruce Gray, a sculpture crafted from a block of cheddar cheese by nationally recognized cheese sculptor Sarah “The Cheese Lady” Kaufmann and a cheese portrait that will be created by artist Lorelle Miller live at the event, according to a city of Santa Clarita news release.

Paintings, drawings and photography centered around the cheese theme will also appear in an outdoor exhibit.

El Trocadero Enchiladas“This is a culinary art event,” said Jeff Barber, supervisor of the city of Santa Clarita’s arts and events office. “It’s pretty fun. Culinary art and the theme of cheese kind of compliment each other and I think that makes it pretty unique.”

Instructors from Culinary Wonders, Santa Clarita’s only recreational cooking school, plan to give a cooking demonstration from their Indian food class, while a traditional mexican cheese workshop and enchilada tasting is planned with Chef Raul Bojorquez and staff from El Trocadero.

Representatives from the SoCal Cheese Collective, a group of cheese industry professionals from across Southern California, will also teach three short cheese classes and provide samples of a few of their favorite cheeses, event officials said.

A few of the free tastings offered by Santa Clarita eateries include a Havarti cheese bite by Salt Creek Grille, cheesecake and mascarphone cupcakes from Kokolita Cakes, mini pizza slices from Vincenzo’s Pizza and more, and attendees 21 and over can stop by the Reparatory East Playhouse and Pulchella Winery on Main Street for free wine and cheese pairings that have been specially prepared for the evening, Barber said.

The free Art SLAM is scheduled to take place Thursday from 7-10 p.m. on Main Street in Old Town Newhall, at the corner of Lyons Avenue and 9th Street.
