Antonovich Calls For Castaic Lake Free Pass For War Veterans

War veterans who were honorably discharged would get a free pass to Castaic Lake under a proposal by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and Mark Ridley-Thomas.

If approved Tuesday, the county would honor the state’s Distinguished Veteran Pass at county-operated state parks including Castaic Lake and the Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, which charge fees.Antonovich Calls For Castaic Lake Free Pass For War Veterans

“These veterans, who have bravely and honorably served our great country, need, deserve and will benefit from the recreational opportunities provided at the California State Parks operated by the (County Parks) Department,” the motion by Antonovich and Ridley-Thomas states.

At Castaic Lake, qualifying military veterans would skirt the $11 daily entrance fee as well as camping and boating fees.

The Distinguished Veteran Pass already applies at state parks, but not at those operated by other jurisdictions such as the county.

Qualifying veterans are those who’ve served in a war zone and have been honorably discharged, as well as any veteran with a disability that is primarily service-related, or those who’ve been held as a POW, or recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

About the Distinguished Veteran Pass

Honorably discharged war veterans who are residents of California with an overall / combined rating at 50% or greater service-connected disability, or were held as prisoners of war by forces hostile to the United States, or recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor are eligible to receive the Distinguished Veteran Pass (formerly Disabled War Veteran/Prisoner of War Pass).

Entitles the holder to the use of all basic facilities (including day use and camping) in California State Park operated units at no charge. The pass is not valid at units operated by local government, private agencies or concessionaires.

It is not valid for group use or sites, special events, commercial use, or for supplemental fees and cannot be used in conjunction with any other pass and/or discount.
