Outside of school, an Agua Dulce teen is competing in rodeos and rides with one of the most accomplished trick riding groups in the country.
In the rodeo arena, 12-year-old Demi Trepanier competes in multiple events, including barrel racing, goat tying, pole bending, ribbon roping and breakaway roping, and when rodeo season is over she spends her time working with Griffith Family Trick Riders.

“I started doing this when I was about four; I did it in “Pee Wees,” Trepanier said. “I like it because I really competition. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Sometimes people come up to you and they tell you ‘good job,’ or when you lose you say ‘good job’ to other people.”
Griffith Family Trick Riders is made up of five kids ranging in age from four to 16, and is the country’s youngest trick riding specialty act.

Trepanier recently travelled to Fort Worth, Texas, for the Fort Worth Stock Show, a grilling month and a half long rodeo with over 30 performances that tested her stamina and ability and showed her that this is what she wants to be doing.
“When we heard the music going on, I would get really excited, but scared at the same time,” she said. “I kind of like that feeling.”
Trepanier said one of her scariest moments during a show is when she wasn’t properly locked in to her horse, so when he stopped quickly, she fell off and hit her head on a pole.
Fortunately, she walked away from the incident with only a black eye and was sore for awhile, she said.

The Trepanier family has lived on a 5-acre ranch since she was born, and she’s ridden horses since she was 4 years old.
“We have a paint horse that used to be a stallion that was gentle enough for kids to ride,” Trepanier said. “The first time i loped, I remember yelling, ‘Look at me, Mom!’”
In addition to trick riding and competing in almost every rodeo event offered for girls, Trepanier also surfs, snowboards and is a trapeze enthusiast.
Someday, she hopes to put her love of science and animals toward a career as an animal biologist.
