Daniel Pearl Local Academy of the Canyons senior Kelsey Taylor and her brother, AOC sophomore Jeffrey Taylor have been instrumental in bringing the Daniel Pearl World Music Days to Santa Clarita since 2010.

This year, the concert will be held on Sunday at Valencia United Methodist Church starting at 3 p.m. Young musicians from across the valley will perform to promote “Harmony for Humanity.” Jazz recording artist Kyle Wolverton will also perform as a special guest.

Now in its 12th year, the Daniel Pearl World Music Days are a worldwide initiative during the month of October, involving more than 10,000 musicians. Performers come together and promote tolerance and peace by dedicating their concert to Pearl.

He was murdered by Al Qaeda terrorists in 2002 while on assignment for the Wall Street Journal in Pakistan.

Taylor first heard about Pearl while volunteering at a World Music Days concert in Santa Monica, and she was inspired to bring the idea back to her hometown.

The spirit of the concert is best captured by what Pearl’s father, Judea Pearl, once wrote:

“Danny embodied qualities that some close-minded people have found hard to accept. He showed that an American can faithfully and unjudgmentally present anti-Western points of view. He showed that a journalist need not be considered a ‘spy,’ because honest and accurate information can benefit both providers and receivers. He showed that being Jewish does not mean being anti-Islam.”

Daniel Pearl’s parents make it a point to attend the Santa Clarita concert every year and will be attending for the fourth annual event.

The event is free and open to the public at the Valencia United Methodist Church on McBean Parkway.
