“The tournament went very well, we didn't have any real problems; no major injuries,” said Mark Hovis, tournament director. “Everybody walked away pretty happy. We try to make it so teams play against teams who are like them. We want to make it as competitive as possible for as many people as we can.”

Tournament games were held at Central Park, Hart High School, Saugus High School, Heritage Park and Arroyo Seco Junior High. Games were held from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

A total of 143 teams competed in the SCV Magic Cup, with 29 teams from 29 separate divisions taking home championship medals.

Divisions were split based on age group and ability. Teams ranged from U7 to U19, and boys and girls both competed in the tournament, Hovis said.

“The purpose of the tournament is to give teams quality competition in preparation for the upcoming Fall 2014 season,” Hovis said. “New or reformed teams have the chance to get some games in before they play in September.”

The SCV Magic is a local soccer club which also hosts club training and youth development programs in Santa Clarita.

“The SCV Magic Soccer Club has been in Santa Clarita for almost 20 years,” Sergio Salvadori, Director of Coaching, said. “In the last nine years we have decided to improve our existing program and make it a more professional model. We have professional, licensed coaches and about 30 teams with anywhere from 400 to 500 players.”

Sergio said the team has special training programs for players that focus on technical skills, goalkeeping, strength and agility.

Poole & Shaffery, LLP was the major sponsor for the tournament and is the overall sponsor for the club.
