The 2013 Miss California Pageant Welcomed Two Santa Clarita Contestants

Over 200 contestants walked the runway in evening gowns and swimsuits at the 2013 Miss California Pageant. The Miss California Pageant is an annual state-wide event that excited the crowds when it took place in Pasadena earlier this year.

Two girls from the Santa Clarita Valley were contestants in the 2013 Miss California pageant. Santa Clarita native, Lauren Moniz represented Greater San Francisco, where she currently attends school, and Katie Boggs represented her home town of Agua Dulce.

After graduating from Canyon High School, Lauren Moniz received a full scholarship to play soccer at San Jose State University. She is currently working on her law degree at Golden Gate University in San Francisco.

Moniz has experience when it comes to pageants. She won the Miss LA County Teen USA 2003 event and then competed in the Miss CA Teen USA pageant where she placed fourth runner up before competing in the most recent Miss California pageant.

“For me, its been a great transformation period,” Moniz said. “Its given me the opportunity to kind of look inside myself and figure out okay, who am I?”

Along with competing in pageants, Moniz is also involved in a non-profit known as Court Appointed Special Advocate where she represents neglected and abused children in the courtroom and other situations in order to ultimately help them find a good home. Moniz enjoys her busy life and is planning on taking her bar exam in July.

Another Miss California contestant, Katie Boggs, grew up as a stunt double in her Agua Dulce home. Her stunt career began at seven years old and she continued to be a stunt double for many actresses and actors until she attended school at the University of Southern California (USC). As a broadcast journalism major, Boggs reported on every single sport on campus. However, she never thought that she would be in a pageant.

“Looking at these girls on the runway that had no scars on their legs, that did not have bumps and bruises, I thought ‘I would love to do that. How could I do it?’,” Boggs said. “Then I realized, why not try? You never know if you don’t try.”

Boggs acknowledges that pageants can be a “dark world” of superficiality and wanted to participate in the pageant while being herself.

“It was the greatest experience,” Boggs said. “Just preparing for it and learning you could really do anything you set your mind to.”

With her first pageant completed, Boggs still travels and broadcasts with many sports teams at USC, while also running the homeless outreach program at Antioch LA. Along with participating in multiple charities, Boggs is also a television host for Sky TV, which broadcasts to more than 10 million homes in the UK.

In the future, Boggs hopes to participate in filming a documentary in a third world country so that she can travel and report at the same time.

“You can only enjoy the ride,” Boggs said.
