Biography of Steve Sturgeon:
Steve and his wife, Julie, settled in Santa Clarita in 1980, seeking an environment where family and community was the guiding force. From his early years in Scouting, volunteering was the “normal” way of getting things done for others. His father led him into Rotary International where he served in many capacities over a 10-year term. (His service to Rotary has begun once again in 2009 to the present day.) His first nonprofit board role was with the San Fernando Valley Girl Scout Council, long before he had a daughter of his own.
It seemed only natural that to be a part of his children’s lives he would be a part of the organizations that had a positive impact on them. Having children busy with outdoor activities, Steve coached, refereed, umpired and served Santa Clarita Parks & Rec, AYSO and Hart Pony Baseball for over 12 years. Donating time, resources and energies to children who might otherwise not be able to participate in travel programs, tournaments or weekly club schedules became a natural part of Steve’s daily schedule.
Steve’s role in the education community in Santa Clarita began with Site Council membership for Sulphur Springs, Elementary. Steve was elected in 1999 to the William S. Hart Union High School Board of Trustees. Steve is now in his 17th year serving local school districts and State committees in a number of roles.
Engaging the needs of the children in this valley broadened into support for several nonprofit organizations including the Child & Family Center and Foundation, the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, Safe Rides, the Senior Center, Boys & Girls Club, COC Foundation, COC President’s Circle, Betty Ferguson Foundation, SCV Theatre Group and more recently, the SCV Sheriff’s Foundation
