West Ranch Baseball Team All Alone In First Place In Foothill League

The West Ranch baseball team beat Golden Valley, 5-2, to take over first place in the Foothill League standings.

The Wildcats scored all five runs in the fourth inning. Jake Spurlin knocked in two runs with a double in the inning.

West Ranch is 8-3 and has a one-game lead over Canyon in the Foothill League standings.

The Saugus baseball team beat Canyon, 5-1, and knocked the Cowboys out of a first-place tie with West Ranch.

Rex Kemple hit a two-run home in the fourth inning to give Saugus a 2-0 lead. He was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. Joe Bahr hit a solo home run for Saugus in the fifth inning.

Valencia’s Luke Soroko pitched a no-hitter and beat Hart, 1-0. Soroko struck out six and walked three batters. A fourth batter reached base on an error. He faced 22 batters, one over the minimum.

Colton Burns drove in the game’s only run on a triple in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In college baseball, The Master’s College swept Westmont College in a doubleheader and won the Golden State Athletic Conference championship.

The Mustangs, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA, won the first game, 5-1, and the second game, 10-0. It is the first time The Master’s College baseball team has won a conference title since 2003.

In college track and field, Karis Frankian from The Master’s College won two events at the Golden State Athletic Conference championships at Westmont College.

She won the 10,000 meters in 37 minutes, 14.95 seconds and set a school record. She also won the 5,000 in 17 minutes, 39.46 seconds.

John Gilbertson won three events at the conference championships. He won the 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000. Jason Logan won the high jump and matched a personal best, clearing 2.10 meters.

In the NBA, the Lakers were swept out of the playoffs, losing to the San Antonio Spurs, 103-82. Dwight Howard scored only seven points and was ejected in the third quarter of what might be his last game as a Laker. He is a restricted free agent and can sign with any team in the league.

In baseball, the Dodgers shut out the visiting Milwaukee Brewers, 2-0. Clayton Kershaw struck out 12 in eight scoreless innings. Carl Crawford hit a pair of solo home runs.

Next up for the Dodgers are the first-place Colorado Rockies. Ted Lilly gets the start for the Dodgers. Tyler Chatwood takes the hill for the Rockies.
