Valencia, Saugus Softball Teams Off To Solid Starts In Mohave Tournament Of Champions

The Valencia and Saugus softball teams posted impressive victories at the Mohave Tournament of Champions in Arizona.

Valencia’s Sydney Mundell threw a no-hitter against Mohave. She struck out 10 and the Vikings won the five-inning game, 8-0.

Wendy Cardinali was 3-for-3 and homered. Ally Johnson had two hits and scored two runs.

The Saugus softball team beat Los Lunas from New Mexico, 7-1. Maddy Jelenicki hit a home run and Rachel Shotzbarger scored two runs and drove in two runs. Taylor Kister also had two RBIs for the Centurions.

Closer to home, the West Ranch softball team shut out Granada Hills, 7-0. Lexi Sorenson pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine. Charlotte Romero was 3-for-4, drove in a run and scored a run.

In high school volleyball, the Hart boys beat Crescenta Valley in four games and won their third match in a row to start the season.

Tanner Tengberg had a match-high 18 kills and four aces. Middle blocker Nolyn Preston had 11 kills and five blocks.

In high school golf, the Hart boys lost a match against Oaks Christian by 24 strokes at Valencia Country Club.

In high school tennis, West Ranch lost to Campbell Hall, 10-8.

In college basketball, the College of the Canyons men lost to Mt. San Antonio College, 93-84, in the third round of the Southern California regional playoffs.

Jaylen Bland led COC in scoring with 31 points and made six 3-pointers.

The Cougars end their season with a 21-9 record and the Western State Conference South Division championship.

In spring training, the Dodgers scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and tied the Texas Rangers, 11-11. Dee Gordon went 2-for-3, scored two runs and stole two bases for the Dodgers.

Adrian Beltre hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning for the Rangers.

In the NBA, the Clippers lost to the Denver Nuggets, 107-92. Chris Paul scored 16 points and had 10 assists in the loss.

In the NHL, the Kings lost to the Dallas Stars, 5-2. Jaromir Jagr scored two goals for the Stars. The Kings had their six-game home winning streak snapped.
