Valencia, Hart, Saugus Advance To Second Round Of Football Playoffs

The Valencia, Hart and Saugus football teams advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Northern Division playoffs.

The Canyon football team lost in the first round and was eliminated from the playoffs.

The Valencia football team beat Redondo Union, 38-17. Vikings quarterback Jake Wallace threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another.

Valencia will play Arroyo Grande in the second round of the Northern Division playoffs.

The Hart football team won a tough road game, 56-35, against Paso Robles. The Indians scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull away late in the game.

Hart running back Connor Wingenroth rushed for a school record 308 yards on 26 carries against Paso Robles. He broke the record of 270 rushing yards set by Delano Howell in 2006.

Hart faces Palos Verdes, the No. 1 seed in the Northern Division playoffs, in the second round on Friday night.

The Saugus football team pulled off the surprise of the night, beating Atascadero, 34-27, and eliminating the third-seeded team from the playoffs.

Saugus running back Reid Rupe broke a 27-27 tie with a 7-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He gained 208 yards on 26 carries.

Centurions quarterback Chris Hamilton rushed for 113 yards on 26 carries.

Saugus will play Mira Costa at Canyon High School on Friday night.

The Canyon football team lost to West Torrance, 35-27. Cowboys quarterback Cade Apsay threw for 282 yards and a touchdown in his final high school football game.

The Trinity Classical Academy football team beat Noli Indian, 71-6, in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 8-man playoffs.

Spencer Klehn scored five touchdowns for Trinity. One of his touchdowns came on a 75-yard kick-off return. He also scored on a 72-yard run.

Trinity will play Desert Chapel in the semifinals on Friday night.

The Santa Clarita Christian football team lost to Mission Prep, 49-12, in the first round of the Southern Section Northeast Division playoffs.

The College of the Canyons football team lost to Allan Hancock College, 34-29. The Cougars had an eight-game winning streak snapped and lost for the first time in the National Division, Northern Conference.

In the NBA, the Lakers beat the visiting Detroit Pistons, 114-99. Jordan Hill led the Lakers with 24 points and 17 rebounds. Next up for the Lakers are the Golden State Warriors on Friday.

In the NHL, the Kings shut out the New York Rangers, 1-0. Ben Scrivens made 37 saves in goal. Tyler Toffoli scored in the second period.
