Valencia Baseball Team Fares Well In California Classic

The Valencia baseball team beat Clovis West, 8-2, in its final game of the California Classic and went 3-0-1 in the three-day event against some of the top teams from Northern California.

The Vikings won two games in the California Classic on Saturday. They blew out Bellarmine from San Jose, 17-4, and Elk Grove, 8-1.
Valencia’s Chad Bible went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the game against Bellarmine. Keston Hiura hit a two-run home run in the third inning for the Vikings.
Valencia collected 18 hits in the game. Scott Ogrin had four hits.
 
The Vikings opened the California Classic with a 5-5 tie against Archbishop Mitty. Valencia scored four runs in the sixth inning to tie the score.
West Ranch won its first game in the California Classic, 7-6, over Clovis West scoring the winning run on a balk in the seventh inning.
 
Jake Bird scored on the balk. He was on third when Cade Spurlin tried a squeeze bunt to score him. But the Clovis West pitcher balked before Spurlin laid down the bunt.
The Wildcats lost their next two games. They lost to Bellarmine, 10-8, and Elk Grove, 16-7, in a six-inning game. West Ranch concluded the tournament with an 11-8 loss to Concord De La Salle.
 
In golf, Phil Mickelson won the British Open with a final round 66 at Muirfield in Scotland. It was the first British Open championship for Mickelson, who won by four strokes over Sweden’s Henrik Stenson.
Mickelson has won five majors, three at the Master’s and one PGA Championship.

In hockey, the Kings and forward Jordan Nolan agreed to a two-year contract. Nolan scored two goals and had four assists and 46 penalty minutes in 44 games with the Kings last season.
 
In baseball, the Dodgers completed the sweep against the Washington Nationals with a 9-2 win.
 
Matt Kemp homered, doubled and drove in three runs in his first game back from the disabled list.
The Dodgers have won three games in a row and eight of their past 10.
 
The Dodgers move on to Toronto to play the Blue Jays tonight. Listen to the game on AM 1220, KHTS. First pitch is at 4:07.
