Valencia Baseball Team Drops To No. 5 In CIF Division 1 Poll

The Valencia baseball team dropped a spot in the latest CIF Southern Section Division 1 baseball poll. The Vikings are ranked No. 5 after losing to Saugus on Friday.

The West Ranch baseball team, winners of its past two games, is ranked just outside the top 10 with others.

Mater Dei is the top-ranked team in Division 1.

In college golf, The Master’s College is in first place after the first two rounds of the Battle at Primm in Nevada.

The Mustangs, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA, shot 9-under as a team and lead the field of 17. Thane Ringler from The Master’s College was 4-under and tied for seventh place after the first two rounds of the tournament.

Mustangs teammates John Lawson and Michael Reitz are also under par. Lawson is 3-under and Reitz is 2-under.

The third and final round of the Battle at Primm is today.

In college baseball, Steve Karkenny from The Master’s College was selected as the Golden State Athletic Conference player of the week. He was 9-for-14 and hit .643 in a three-game sweep over San Diego Christian.

Karkenny hit .556 with two home runs and seven RBIs last week for the Mustangs. It was the second time this season he was selected as the conference player of the week.

In auto racing, Alex Tagliani, driving for the Barracuda Racing team owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta, was 10th at the Izod IndyCar Series season opening Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in Florida.

James Hinchcliffe, driving for Andretti Autosport, won the race, the first of his IndyCar Series career.

In the NBA, the Lakers lost to the Golden State Warriors, 109-103, and lost their third game in a row.

In spring training, the Dodgers lost to the Kansas City Royals, 8-2. The Royals roughed up Dodgers starter Zack Greinke for five runs on six hits in three innings.

In the NHL, the Kings beat the Chicago Blackhawks, 5-4. Dustin Brown scored the game-winner for the Kings in the third period.
