The UCLA Bruins, with a pair of Foothill League veterans, won the NCAA College World Series by sweeping Mississippi State.
UCLA shut out Mississippi State, 8-0, in the championship game.
Hart High graduate Pat Valaika started at shortstop for UCLA and went 1-for-5 with an RBI. His single in the third inning gave the Bruins a 3-0 lead.
Valencia High graduate Shane Zeile started at catcher and guided UCLA starter Nick Vander Tuig to eight shutout innings.
UCLA won its first College World Series title and its 109th national championship. The Bruins swept Mississippi State, 2-0, and ended the season with an 11-game winning streak.
UCLA allowed only four runs in five games and set a College World Series record for fewest runs allowed in the metal-bat era.

In track and field, Canyon High graduate Alysia Montano won the 400 meters at the US Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake University in Iowa.
Montano won her fourth 800 meter race in a row at the US Outdoor Track and Field Championships. It was her fifth overall national title in the 800.
Santa Clarita’s Allison Felix was edged out by Kimberlyn Duncan in the 200. Duncan won the race in 21.80 seconds. Felix, a gold medalist in the 200 at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, was second in 21.85 seconds.
In girls basketball, Valencia reached the championship game of the Saugus summer tournament and lost to Sierra Canyon.
Sierra Canyon is the reigning CIF Division 5 state champion.
In baseball, the Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants, 6-5, and won their fourth game in a row. The Dodgers scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie.
Hanley Ramirez and Mark Ellis each hit two-run home runs for the Dodgers. Matt Kemp was 1-for-4 and scored a run in his first game back from the disabled list.
Yasiel Puig went 0-for-4 and saw his batting average drop to .420.
The Dodgers can go for the sweep against the Giants tonight at Dodger Stadium. Clayton Kershaw starts for the Dodgers against Tim Lincecum for the Giants.
