Trinity Boys Basketball Team Faces Rio Hondo Prep In CIF Championsip Game

The Trinity boys basketball team will play for its first CIF championship in school history on Saturday at Mater Dei High School.

Trinity takes on Rio Hondo Prep at 9:30 in the morning in the championship game of the Southern Section Division 6 playoffs.

Trinity is the No. 2 seed in the playoffs and the second-place team from the Heritage League. The Knights beat Valley Christian, 64-53, in the semifinals.

Rio Hondo Prep is the top-seeded team in the Division 6 playoffs and the second-place team from the Prep League. Rio Hondo beat Desert Chapel, 78-74, in their semifinal game.

In college basketball, the College of the Canyons men are the No. 6 seeded team in the Southern California Regional playoffs. The Cougars, the champions of the Western State Conference South Division, will play Allan Hancock College in the first round on Friday.

The College of the Canyons women are the No. 9 seed in the Southern California Regional playoffs. The Lady Cougars open on the road against Long Beach City College, the No. 8 seed in the Southern California Regionals.

The Master’s College women’s basketball team beat Hope International, 67-46, in the Golden State Athletic Conference regular season finale. The Lady Mustangs, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA, are the third seed in the conference tournament and have a bye in the first round.

The Master’s College men lost to Hope International, 50-44, in the Golden State Athletic Conference finale. The Mustangs will play Arizona Christian in Phoenix in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday.

In the NBA, the Lakers lost to the Denver Nuggets, 119-108, and had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Kobe Bryant scored 29 points and had nine assists, but the Lakers dropped to two games under .500. They are 11-4 in their past 15 games.

In the NHL, the Kings beat the visiting Anaheim Ducks, 5-2, and won their fourth game in a row. Dustin Penner scored his first goal of the season and Jeff Carter added an empty-netter, his 10th of the season.

The Kings snapped the Ducks’ six-game winning streak.
