Trinity Boys Basketball Reaches CIF Championship Game

The Trinity boys basketball team is on a history making run. The Knights are in the championship game of the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs after a 61-53 win over Joshua Springs in the semifinals.

Trinity is on the verge of winning the first CIF basketball championship in school history. The boys are one game away from winning the first CIF championship in any sport for the school.

Junior Spencer Klehn scored 21 points and had 11 rebounds against Joshua Springs. Freshman Michael Mateo scored 13 points, nine in the first half.

The Knights are 18-5, the second-seeded team in the Division 6 playoffs and will play Rio Hondo Prep in the championship game.

The West Ranch boys basketball team ended its playoff run against Dana Hills. The Wildcats lost, 61-59, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division 1A playoffs.

West Ranch’s Kevin Harris had a big game. He scored a game-high 28 points and made four 3-pointers. The Wildcats nearly erased a 12-point, fourth quarter deficit, but came up a little short.

On the girls side, Canyon lost to Lynwood, 43-39, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs.

Alia McCoy scored 12 points for Canyon, but fouled out of the game midway through the fourth quarter.

In the low-scoring affair, Canyon trailed Lynwood, 24-7, at halftime. The Canyon girls outscored Lynwood, 32-19, in the second half.

In college basketball, the College of the Canyons men’s team lost to Citrus College, 77-71, in the championship game of the Western State Conference South Division Tournament.

Golden Valley High graduate Stevie Thornton, playing for Citrus College, scored a game-high 27 pointers and hit the game-deciding 3-pointer in the final minute of the game.

Jaylen Bland scored a team-high 17 points for COC.

In the NBA, the Lakers beat the Dallas Mavericks, 103-99, and won their third game in a row.

Kobe Bryant scored 38 points, had 12 rebounds and seven assists.

In the NHL, the Kings are home for a game against the Ducks tonight at Staples Center. The Ducks have a six-game winning streak and the second best record in the NHL.

The Kings have won three games in a row, including 4-1 over the Avalanche on Saturday, and five of their past six.
