Saugus Boys Volleyball Team Snaps Valencia's Foothill League Winning Streak

The Saugus volleyball team ended one of the longest winning streaks in California history. The Centurions beat Valencia in four games in the Foothill League opener. Valencia entered the match with 112 league wins in a row, the most of any team in the state.

Saugus won the first set of the match, but Valencia won the second and tied the match.

Saugus won the next two sets and closed it out 26-24 in the fourth.

Max Nua had 10 kills for Saugus. Grant Spooner directed the Saugus offense with 39 assists.

Kyle Ensing led Valencia with 19 kills.

In high school track and field, the Golden Valley boys and girls teams beat West Ranch in the Foothill League opening meet. The Golden Valley boys won, 82-54. The Golden Valley girls won 90-46.

The Canyon boys beat Valencia, 84-53. The Canyon girls won their meet over Valencia, 85-51.

The Saugus boys won their meet against Hart, 73-63. The Saugus girls also topped Hart, 114-22.

The Master’s College is sending four athletes to compete in the Stanford Invitational track and field meet in Palo Alto at the end of the month.

John Gilbertson will compete in the 10,000 meters. He competed in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters races last year.

Matthew Crichton and David Eller will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Jason Logan was invited to participate in the high jump.

The Stanford Invitational is March 29 and 30.

In spring training, the Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs, 5-4, but learned they will be without shortstop Hanely Ramirez for at least eight weeks. Ramirez injured his thumb in the World Baseball Classic and will need surgery.

On the field, Alex Castellanos hit a three-run home run for the Dodgers. It was his fourth home run in the Cactus League.

In the NHL, the Kings lost to the visiting Dallas Stars, 2-0, and had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Next up for the Kings are the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night.
