College Of The Canyons' Tim White Wins State Title In Triple Jump

Tim White from College of the Canyons won a state title in the triple jump at the Outdoor Track and Field Championships in San Mateo.

He won the triple jump in 51 feet, 3.5 inches, nearly four feet longer than the second place jumper.

Hart High graduate Grace Graham-Zamudio, running for Glendale College, won three state championships. She won the 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 meter races.

College of the Canyons freshman Anthony Fowler was eighth in the 400.

In high school track and field, eight athletes from the Foothill League qualified for the Masters Meet.

Saugus High led the way with three runners qualifying to compete in the Masters Meet. Samantha Ortega was the runner-up in the 3,200 race in Division 2 at the Southern Section Track and Field finals.

Rodrigo Ornelas was third in the boys Division 2 3,200 race. Sabrina Janes was fifth in the 800.

Canyon’s Jeremy Kimmer qualified in the high jump after finishing in second place and setting a school record at 6 feet, 9 inches, in the Division 2 meet.

Valencia’s Olivia Pear qualified for the girls 800. West Ranch’s Pierce Miller qualified in the boys 800.

Valencia’s Briana Pica will compete in the pole vault.

Golden Valley’s Courtney Maduike qualified in the discus and is the first girl athlete from Golden Valley to advance to the Masters Meet.

In high school football, Westlake won the inaugural Cowboys Round-up 7-on-7 passing tournament. The Warriors shut out Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks, 42-0, in the title game.

Canyon reached the semifinals and lost to Notre Dame, 20-12.

Valencia was 2-3 in the tournament with wins over Buena and Eastside. Saugus also won two games, downing Buena and Eastside.

In auto racing, Alex Tagliani, driving for the Barracuda Racing team owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta in the Izod IndyCar Series, will start 11th in the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500.

Tagliani posted a four-lap average speed of 227.386 mph in qualifying. Ed Carpenter won the pole. The Indy 500 is Sunday.

In baseball, the Dodgers lost to the Atlanta Braves, 5-2, and were swept over the weekend. The Braves scored four runs in the eighth inning to take the lead and win the game.

The Dodgers move on to Milwaukee to start a series against the Brewers tonight. Clayton Kershaw gets the start for the Dodgers against Yovani Gallardo for the Brewers.
