COC’s Mychal Rivera Selected By The Oakland Raiders In NFL Draft

College of the Canyons alum Mychal Rivera was selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft by the Oakland Raiders.

The tight end played one season at College of the Canyons before transferring to the University of Tennessee. He caught 32 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns in his only season at COC in 2009.

Three other former COC football players signed free-agent contracts with NFL teams after the draft.

Offensive lineman Lou Alexander signed with the New Orleans Saints. He played for the University of Syracuse after two seasons at College of the Canyons.

Defensive end Marquis Jackson signed with the Minnesota Vikings. He led the 2008 COC football team in sacks with 10.5 and continued his college career at Portland State and Texas Southern.

Offensive lineman Caylin Hauptmann signed with the Cleveland Browns. He played at COC for one season before transferring to Florida International.

In high school softball, Hart beat Saugus, 6-5, and tightened up the Foothill League standings. Katie Reed drove in three runs including the game winner in the seventh inning.

She was the starter for Hart and gave up five runs on five hits to earn the win.

West Ranch shut out Canyon, 12-0, to remain undefeated in the Foothill League. The Wildcats hit three home runs in the first inning. Kylie Sorenson had three hits, a home run, two doubles and drove in four runs.

The Valencia softball team shut out Golden Valley, 11-0, behind a 4-for-4 day from Kristina Brackpool. She hit a home run and drove in five runs.

In high school ice hockey, Valencia beat Bakersfield, 3-1, in the Ice Station Valencia league. Trevin Kozlowski made 28 saves in goal for Valencia. Jordan Spesak, Collin Stell and Luc Whyte each had two points for the Vikings.

The Saugus ice hockey team beat Canyon, 7-3. Saugus took 70 shots in the game.

The Hart ice hockey team lost to West Valley, 6-4. Gregg Figg scored three points for Hart.

Antelope Valley beat Burbank, 14-1.

In the NBA, the Clippers lost to the Memphis Grizzlies, 103-93, in Game 5 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. The Grizzlies lead the series, 3-2. Game 6 is in Memphis on Friday.

In the NHL, the Kings lost to the St. Louis Blues, 2-1, in overtime of Game 1 of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Game 2 is in St. Louis on Thursday.

In baseball, the Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies, 6-2. Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu struck out 12 in six innings and gave up two runs on three hits to earn the win.

The series between the Dodgers and the Rockies concludes tonight.
