COC Women’s Soccer Team Shuts Out Bakersfield

The College of the Canyons women’s soccer team shut out Bakersfield, 1-0, and moved into sole possession of first place in the Western State Conference South standings.

Stacey Atwater scored a goal off an assist from Lizzie Rivas in the second half.

Katherine Koury made five saves in goal for the shutout.

The Lady Cougars improved to 7-1-2 overall and are undefeated at 3-0 in conference play.

The Master’s College women’s soccer team moved up to No. 11 in the NAIA rankings.

The Lady Mustangs shut out Arizona Christian, 4-0, and coach Curtis Lewis won the 80th game of his career at The Master’s College on Saturday.

Natasha Coyle scored two goals. Canyon High graduate Devon Goff and Jasmine Benson also scored for the Lady Mustangs.

They ran their record to 10-0 and 2-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

The Lady Mustangs take on Concordia, ranked No. 18 in the NAIA, on the road today.

In volleyball, The Master’s College women lost to Concordia, 3-1, in a match-up of NAIA top 25 teams.

The Master’s College, ranked No. 11 in the recently released NAIA poll, won the first game.

Concordia, the No. 1 team in the NAIA, won the next three games. The Lady Mustangs are 14-4 and 4-2 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. Concordia ran its undefeated record to 15-0, 6-0 in conference.

In high school football, Hart High’s Mike Herrington was voted the best football coach in California by USA Today in a fan poll. He received 48 percent of the votes.

Harry Welch, the former Canyon High coach, was second in the voting.

In baseball, the Detroit Tigers staved off elimination with an 8-6 win over the Oakland A’s in Game 4 of the American League Division Series. The series is tied 2-2.

The Boston Red Sox advanced to the American League Championship Series after winning Game 4 of the Division Series, 3-1, over the Tampa Bay Rays.
