COC Men’s Basketball Team Wins Conference Opener

The College of the Canyons men’s basketball team won its Western State Conference opener, 88-82, over Pierce College.

COC led 50-38 at halftime. Ilya Ilyayev scored 31 points. The Cougars evened its overall record at 7-7.

Next up for the COC men is Santa Barbara City College on Saturday.

In high school soccer, the Golden Valley boys beat Santa Paula, 2-1. The Grizzlies are 6-6-2. The Foothill League season for the boys begins Tuesday.

The Valencia girls soccer team shut out Granada Hills, 1-0. Sammy Simon scored the lone goal of the game for Valencia, which improved to 11-1-1.

In high school basketball, the Canyon boys beat Rio Mesa, 66-38, and improved to 15-1. Dean Hendrix- Davis scored 18 points for the Cowboys.

The Canyon girls basketball team beat Narbonne, 44-40, in the quarterfinals of the Fairfax tournament. Kali Vittallo and Delaney McCann each scored 12 points for Canyon. The Canyon girls are 14-2.

Los Angeles Sports Report

In the NBA, the Lakers lost to the Houston Rockets, 113-99. The Lakers led, 57-52, at halftime but were outscored 33-15 in the third quarter.

Pau Gasol scored 21 points and had 12 rebounds. The Lakers lost for the ninth time in the past 10 games.

The Clippers beat the visiting Boston Celtics, 111-105. Blake Griffin led the Clippers with 29 points and eight assists.

The Clippers have won three of their past four games.

The Lakers and Clipper meet at Staples Center for a game on Friday night. Tipoff is at 7:30.

In the NHL, the Kings are home for a game against the Boston Bruins tonight. The Kings are reeling and have lost six of their past seven games. They are coming off a 2-1 shootout loss to the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.
