Retail Theft And Fraud Prevention Training Program
City and Sheriff’s team up to educate retail industry.
The City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station continue to host monthly training programs that help educate the local business community on crime prevention topics to assist them in their daily business operations. The third such class will focus on the growing crime trend that targets the retail industry through theft and fraud. Retail owners, managers and loss prevention employees are invited to attend this training which will identify ways to combat credit card and check fraud activity.
Additionally, the class will offer training on a second growing crime problem involving Organized Retail Crime. Gangs of thieves travel throughout this County stealing millions of dollars in merchandise from merchants. Last year, with the assistance of the new City of Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Business Alliance, ORC Investigators from the Gap Stores nabbed a team of three in a theft spree at our local town shopping center. Cooperative relationships between our business community and law enforcement will help stop crime in our community.
This three hour training session is hosted through the City of Santa Clarita’s Sheriff’s Business Relations Office and will be held in the City Hall Century Room, located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard, Santa Clarita on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
This crime prevention, education and awareness class will be taught by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station’s Detective Bureau – Burglary Team and a representative from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Commercial Crimes Bureau. Special training and information relating to the Organized Retail Crime problem will be presented by national experts in ORC Investigations. Topics will include prevention of crime through environmental design, new technology, check and credit card fraud detection, combating theft from the store level, and other methods to protect our growing retail business sector.
This is a very unique program, as the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and City of Santa Clarita join together with local businesses to protect our local retailers before crime happens. The City and Sheriff’s see themselves as proactive in the area of crime prevention, rather than reactive.
