City Hall will be a temporary resting place for the newly completed Amgen Tour of California Bear, which will make its way to the Amgen Stage Six awards stage on Friday, February 23, 2007, beginning at 11 a.m.
The Santa Clarita Arts Advisory Committee reviewed 9 different artist proposals for the Amgen Tour of California Bear and selected local artist, Frank Rock, to paint the fiberglass giant in honor of America’s most important cycling race.
Rock's artwork highlights professional cyclists riding past landmarks such as, the Golden Gate Bridge, windmills near Santa Barbara and an early as evening skyline of Six Flags Magic Mountain.
Rock will also complete the same artwork on a small scale model of the bear, which will be awarded to the winner of the Santa Clarita Stage Six.
Rock is a long time resident of Santa Clarita and has created several murals in the City including the California Bear on display at the Canyon Theater Guild.
The Amgen Tour of California Bear will be on display at City Hall in the main lobby on the first floor until Friday, February 23, 2007, then, it will be placed prominently on the awards stage on McBean Parkway between Valencia Boulevard and Magic Mountain Parkway on February 24th. After the race, the Bear will return to the City Hall first floor lobby to be on display until March 5th.
The bear sculpture is part of the innovative California Bear Art in Public Places program sponsored by the City of Santa Clarita’s Arts and Events office.
The fiberglass giant is approximately 4 feet wide, 5 feet tall, 9 feet long, weighs 250 pounds and is modeled after the largest bear captured in California, which was recorded in Santa Clarita in 1871.
