Western fashions will dominate the runway this spring

Western fashions will dominate the runway this spring at the City’s Cowboy Couture Fashion Show, a one-of-a-kind tribute to Santa Clarita’s Western roots and modern-day charm. The Fashion Show is back by popular demand and will kick off the City’s 13th Annual Cowboy Festival on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at the Canyon Theater Guild Playhouse, featuring the latest in Western fashion from some of the nations most sought after couture designers including Marrika Nakk, Double D Ranchwear and Ann & Eve.

This year’s Cowboy Couture will feature local celebrity models and clothing from local boutiques enabling guests to purchase the fashions they enjoy in the show. This year, local boutiques including Margo’s J. Serrano, Ignition, Subliminal, Naughty but Nice and Boot Barn will have featured fashions in the show. The fashion-focused evening is perfect for men and women alike, beginning with an elegant wine reception in the foyer at the Playhouse, followed by the show itself, which features scores of Western influenced designs for men and women, from extravagant and antique to adaptable Cowboy chic. The evening’s models include community members from local businesses and charity organizations. Santa Clarita’s rich Western heritage makes it an ideal setting for a Western-inspired fashion show. In fact, Santa Clarita is presently home to one of television hottest Western television shows, HBO’s “Deadwood,” which has sparked increased interest in Cowboy fashion the world over. However, while the designs seen at Cowboy Couture will include elements of the past, they will also include undeniable modern day flair. “Western fashions have inspired designers for decades, and with Santa Clarita’s rich Western heritage, Cowboy Couture is an ideal way to bring the past into the present,” said Mayor Laurene Weste. “Our show celebrates the Western tradition, showcasing unique designs that have been adapted to create today’s modern Western style,” she added.

For the first time at Couture, fashions from Rodeo Tailor Nudie Cohn will be featured in the show. Nudie is well known for his work with some of the entertainment industries elite, including Roy Rogers, John Lennon, John Wayne, Steve McQueen, Johnny Cash, Cher, Elton John, Liberace, Eric Clapton and the rock band America. However, Nudie is probably best known for the $10,000 gold suite he designed for Elvis Presley, which rocketed him to stardom and solidified his place in the fashion industry. Unfortunately Nudie passed away in 1984. Today Nudie’s granddaughter Jamie Lee carries on his tradition of crafting one-of-a-kind Western clothing featuring ornate leatherwork, silverwork, embroidery, and eye-catching rhinestones, resulting in the best rodeo tailoring money can buy. Designer Amy Hoban, whose Western line “Californiawear” has been featured in the fashion pages of Cowboys & Indians magazine, will also be featured in the show, debuting pieces from her new collection, including retro cowgirl outfits and cowboy shirts. Couture attendees will delight in live entertainment by singer/songwriter Katy Moffatt, whose two Columbia albums “Katy” and “Kissin in the California Sun” have garnered rave reviews from Rolling Stone and Newsweek magazines. Moffatt, a Santa Clarita resident, was recently dubbed one of America’s most honest and affecting singer-songwriters and her Southwest Spirit is sure to perfectly complement the evening.
