Our local Santa Clarita Red Cross is looking for volunteers to train in disaster preparedness, and depending on your availability and skills, volunteer to assist in the Katrina disaster.
Here in Santa Clarita our Disaster Volunteers have been making arrangements to attend local fund raisers to help in the collection of donations and to say thank you to our community.
Currently the Red Cross is committed to the Six Flags Magic Mountain fund raiser on Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM. They will also be attending the Jazz and Blues concert at the Hyatt today and next Friday evening.
The volunteers will be at the Red Cross Service Center this Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM. The office is in the K-Mart shopping center at the corner of Soledad, Bouquet and San Fernando Roads. Depending on the need they will be doing this for several weeks.
If you're interested in becoming a member of the Disaster Service Human Resource team, there is a 4 hour class to prepare volunteers to travel to the disaster zone. These classes are open to all interested people, but depending on your skills, you should preferably have some previous Disaster Training. The classes will be at the Red Cross Headquarters on Wilshire Blvd. Currently they are scheduled for Saturday 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM and on Tuesday at the same time and place. Classes will be on going. The Red Cross will need volunteers to go to the disaster zone for several months so there will be plenty of opportunities.
The commitment to go to the disaster zone is for 9 days, that will include 2 travel days and 7 days of volunteering.
This is a rapidly developing relief operation so the situation is fluid. Here in Santa Clarita we must remain mindful that our fire season lasts until late October.
Thank you for your help and support.
