“KHTS has provided entertainment, education and leadership in Santa Clarita for two decades. I am happy to recognize their contributions and highlight an outstanding small business in our community,” Richman said.
Carl and Jeri Goldman owned the Santa Clarita radio station, under the call letters KBET from 1990 through 1998. They sold the station to Clear Channel Broadcasting in 1998, and repurchased it from Clear Channel, turning it on as KHTS in October 2003. During the 1994 earthquake, under the Goldman’s leadership, the station was instrumental in assisting in the Santa Clarita recovery in the response and aftermath of the quake. They have also provided vital information to the community during recent fires.
"We are honored to receive this award,” said Carl. “There are so many deserving businesses in our valley, people who truly care about our community, who don’t just give money, but pull up their sleeves and devote countless hours of time, energy and leadership.”
Since re-launching KHTS, the Goldman’s have led a variety of causes in Santa Clarita. Jeri was named Santa Clarita Woman of the Year in 2005 for her philanthropic work. Jeri currently serves on the boards of Carousel Ranch, the Providence Holy-Cross Hospital Foundation, along with serving on a variety of Advisory Boards and committees.
Carl is current Vice-President, Government Affairs for the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce and he Chairs the Santa Clarita Council for the American Red Cross, as well as heading up the Santa Clarita Disaster Coalition. Carl also serves on numerous local advisory boards and committees.
“We feel it is our obligation to be more than just a radio station,” reflected Carl. “We really want to make a difference. In March we sponsored, along with Assemblyman Richman and Valencia Acura’s Don and Cheri Fleming, a trip to Sacramento. We drove forty people up to Sacramento, a great cross section of our community leaders, and broadcast along the way. We met with Government representatives for two days, exchanging ideas and giving our local leaders a better understanding of the process.”
The official Small Business of the Year award will be presented May 30th during Small Business Day in Sacramento.
