International Night at Pico Canyon Elementary
Pico Canyon Elementary School officials held their annual International Night in the school’s Multi-Purpose Room Friday night.
The event gives students and their families the opportunity to celebrate their heritages and cultures with colorful displays that teach about each country’s culture, arts and food, as well as give performances of cultural dances and music, according to a news release by Newhall School District.
“It’s a culminating event for what we call Husky Heritage month, which is the whole month of February,” said Laura Banda, the school’s principal. “It celebrates our diversity here at Pico Canyon. It’s a great event where the families come together and the children get to learn about other cultures and each other.”
More than 30 families represented the 14 countries on display and an estimated 500 people attended the event, said Banda.

Book Fair Night at Peachland Elementary
Peachland Avenue Elementary School officials announced their annual Book Fair week starting Monday, with Book Fair Night scheduled for Thursday evening.
The book fair is an annual opportunity for families to purchase books for their own home library or their child’s classroom, with proceeds benefiting the school’s Parent Teacher’s Association, according to a news release by Newhall School District.
“Scholastic comes out and drops off all of the books for the week,” said Sarah Johnson, the school’s principal. “All week long the book fair is open. Students can buy books, but also the teachers put up a wish list for students and families to buy them books as gifts for the class. They can buy them all during the week, but most parents come Thursday night.”
More than 100 people are expected to attend the free event, which features raffles, reading time for parents and their children, food trucks and a dog dressed in a costume that is decorated with books, said Johnson.
“It’s basically a celebration of reading to encourage our kids to read,” Johnson said.
Book Fair Night is scheduled for Thursday from 5-7:30 p.m. at Peachland Avenue Elementary School, located at 24800 Peachland Avenue in Newhall.
