Newhall School District's upcoming Parent Summit will give parents a chance to discuss significant education issues, such as the Local Control Funding Formula and Common Core.
Every two years, the Newhall School District  holds their Parent Summit and Volunteer Recognition meeting, to help parents understand changes in local schools and express their opinions.

This year, the Summit at Wiley Canyon Elementary School  on Thursday, Feb. 27 from 5 to 8:30 p.m., will cover three significant issues facing the district: the state’s Local Control Funding Formula ; Common Core Standards , including the new Smarter Balanced Assessment ; and the district’s mission statement in light of these new realities.
Candace Fleece, the district’s professional development specialist will lead parents in a discussion of sample questions for the Smarter Balanced Assessment, which is a new form of computer-based state testing based on Common Core.
Parents will have the chance to take portions of the test during the meeting and experience firsthand what their children will be required to learn.
“When you do that with parents, it’s eye-opening…” said District Superintendent Marc Winger.

Ronna Wolcott, assistant superintendent of business services, will talk to parents about the Local Control Funding Formula and how it’s changing the ways that California schools are funded.
Parents can be involved in a series of upcoming meetings at every school site in the district to discuss how the LCFF money is used.

Winger will lead the discussion of the district’s mission statement.
“Given all these huge changes that California education is going through, we haven’t looked at our mission statement for 15 years,” he said.
No final decisions will be made at Thursday’s meeting, but parents, teachers and administrators will begin talking about the revision process.
The Governing Board will also honor a school site council “Volunteer of the Year” from each school, along with members of the Measure E Citizens Oversight Committee.
“This evening is a chance for parents to gain some information about very important topics that affect our students and staff, help the district honor its volunteers, and interact with administrators and school board members,” said Board President Brian Walters. “We welcome everyone who wants to join us for the evening.”
