The College of the Canyons women’s basketball team reached the championship game of the Ventura College Kiwanis Tournament, but lost to the host team, 85-59.
Sophomore Shawn Kolani scored 19 points and had nine assists for COC in the loss. Keiona Mathews recorded her fourth double-double in nine games with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady Cougars dropped to 5-4.

College of the Canyons Sports and Master's College Sports
The COC women beat Mt. San Antonio College, 68-67, in the semifinals of the tournament. Mt. SAC is the No. 1 ranked team in the state.
Vikki Martinez made one of two free throws with one second left in the game to seal the victory for COC over Mt. SAC.
In college volleyball, The Master’s College women open the NAIA national championship tournament in Sioux City, Iowa, against MidAmerica Nazarene today.
The Master’s College women won their opening round match against Cal State San Marcos to earn a spot in the national tournament in Iowa.
The Lady Mustangs are in a pool with MidAmerica Nazarene, Madonna University and Rocky Mountain College. The pool play winners will advance to the single-elimination portion of the tournament on Friday.
The College of the Canyons women lost to Grossmont College, 3-0, in the second round of the Southern California Regional volleyball playoffs.
COC entered the tournament as the No. 10 seed in the playoffs. Grossmont is the No. 2 seed.
Freshman Serena LeDuff had 13 kills and two aces in the match against Grossmont. COC ends its season with a 21-4 record and won its first Western State Conference championship since 2000.

In college football, USC hired Steve Sarkisian as its new coach, passing up Ed Orgeron, who was the interim coach since September.
Orgeron coached the Trojans and went 6-2 after taking over on Sept. 28. His two losses were against Notre Dame and UCLA. He resigned after learning he was not hired as the next USC coach.
In the NHL, the Kings beat the visiting St. Louis Blues, 3-2. Next up for the Kings are the Anaheim Ducks. Listen to the game tonight on AM 1220, KHTS. The puck drops at 7.
