It was announced today that Santa Clarita will be the only city in California to host the Wings For Life World Run on Sunday, May 4, 2014. The Wings for Life World Run is one of the largest and most unique running events ever staged in which thousands of runners in up to 40 locations on six different continents will begin running at exactly the same time. One hundred percent of the race entry fee goes to spinal cord research.
The City of Santa Clarita has been selected as the only West Coast city in the United States to host the Wings for Life World Run. Santa Clarita joins a list of four host cities in the U.S. including: Atlantic City, Denver, and Sunrise, FL.
“The City of Santa Clarita is honored to have been selected as the only host city in California for this global race,” commented Mayor Bob Kellar. “Over the years we’ve hosted some of the world’s best athletes at events like the Santa Clarita Marathon and Amgen Tour of California and we look forward to providing a world class welcome for competitors and supporters of the Wings for Life World Run.”
Unlike traditional races, the Wings for Life World Run has no set distance or finish line. Instead, competitors will begin racing simultaneously and will run in front of an advancing “catcher car” governed by the single, global race schedule. The competition ends for a runner once the catcher car overtakes them. This process will continue worldwide until there is one male and female athlete running, and then those competitors will be crowned champions.
The Wings for Life World Run is expected to bring a significant economic impact to Santa Clarita as competitors from California and neighboring states book rooms, shop, dine, and enjoy the city’s attractions and businesses.
All race fee proceeds will support Wings for Life, a not-for-profit spinal cord research foundation with a mission to find a cure for spinal cord injury. The organization funds world-class scientific research and clinical trials around the globe aimed at healing the injured spinal cord.
