Caregiving is about much more than simply providing for the physical needs of an aging friend or family member. To help local caregivers find fresh perspective and energy, as well as learn practical information, the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center is bringing back its 10-week Caregiver Bootcamp, starting Thursday, Oct. 3.

The group will meet at the Senior Center in Newhall from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, except Oct. 31 and Nov. 28. The course curriculum will focus on effective techniques and suggestions for caregivers, in addition to providing a forum for discussion. The classes will be led by care manager Stephanie Sauer, from the Senior Center’s Supportive Services department.
“Caregiving can be an emotionally charged experience, and the aim of this program is to help caregivers find balance,” Sauer said. “Hopefully this course will help equip them for any challenges they may face.”
Sauer plans to cover the following topics:
- Realistically identifying what is “normal” versus “not normal” aging
- Best methods of fall prevention and home safety
- Immediate, practical solutions for identifying and overcoming negative thought patterns
- Proven strategies for engaging in difficult conversations and why it’s important
This is the second time the Senior Center has held an evening bootcamp, specifically for those caregivers who have a job during the day.
“We hope to have it be an ongoing thing,” said SuzAnn Nelsen, director of Support Services. “Because it really does target those people who are working.”
There is no cost for the program, but reservations are required and space is limited. To RSVP for the course or for more information, contact Stephanie Sauer at 661-259-9444, ext. 128, or email firstname.lastname@example.org .
