“He’s been through surgery, and he’s in the ICU,” said Sgt. Dean Currie, head of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s COBRA Unit. “From what I’ve heard, he’s expected to survive.”
Detectives Monday were still conducting an investigation of the scene at Newhall Avenue, near the Canyon Crest Apartments and Highway 14.
The crime took place around 8 p.m., according to Sheriff’s Station officials, who said the victim was taken to the hospital shortly after.
Based on preliminary reports, detectives are unsure yet whether the incident was gang-related, Currie said, adding that they were still in the process of investigating witnesses, and asking anyone else with information about the fight to come forward.
Preliminary information has led detectives to believe that once the victim parked his vehicle at the location, a dark-colored, possible late-1990s Chevy Impala with two male occupants crashed into the victim’s vehicle, according to a Sheriff's Department statement.
It is possible that this traffic collision was intentional. After the traffic collision, one of the male suspects reportedly confronted the victim at the driver’s side door of the victim’s vehicle. The victim was then stabbed. The suspects fled the area in their vehicle and have not yet been located.
Currie leads the Sheriff’s Station’s Career Offenders Burglary Robbery Assault team, which investigates all gang-related and juvenile crime in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Detectives are looking for two suspects, a driver and a passenger.
Detectives said they would seek an attempted murder charge against the suspect, who has not been identified at this time, Currie said.
“(Assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder) are very close,” Currie said. “The difference is intent. We’re going to go with attempted murder because of the severity of the injury.”
