Buttelman brings her extensive knowledge of the local nonprofit scene, arts and entertainment in the Santa Clarita Valley to her stories.
“There are just few places like the Santa Clarita Valley in Southern California, where the people truly care about each other and try to do the right thing,” Buttelman said, describing why she enjoys covering the approximately 200 nonprofits that operate locally.
“I think it can be difficult for businesses because they’re constantly besieged with requests, but I’m passionate about covering the nonprofits, which is part of the social life of the Santa Clarita Valley.”
In addition to writing for KHTS AM-1220, Buttelman is planning to launch her site EverythingSCV.com by midSeptember, and her stories also will be featured on HometownStation.com.
“We’re thrilled to have such a well-loved member of the community joining our team,” said Jeri Seratti-Goldman, co-owner of KHTS AM-1220. “(Buttelman) is a great addition because nobody understands the social scene in the Santa Clarita Valley as well as she does. Her writings have been such a blessing to local nonprofits in giving awareness and attention to their causes.”
The site will highlight the surroundings, nonprofits and events in an area Buttelman has spent more than a decade covering.
“It’s going to be a calendar-based website,” Buttelman said, mentioning wine-tasting, music, events, sports and nonprofits as some of the events that will be listed.
“If you’re only interested in wine tasting, for example, you can search by that, too,” she said, adding that the site will also highlight regional events that Santa Clarita Valley residents often visit.
“It will also include coverage of events, and my SCV Scene column,” she said.
Buttelman worked at the L.A. Times for nearly two decades as a manager in advertising sales. After leaving the L.A. Times, she pursued a degree in journalism and interned with a team of Times investigative reporters, which helped uncover a donation-for-admissions scandal at University of California Los Angeles.
In addition to covering local nonprofits, Buttelman is involved in two herself.
Buttelman works with the SCV Women and Men of Honor and the SCV Youth Performing Arts.
SCV Youth Performing Arts is an after-school drama enrichment program that encourages students at local elementary schools to get involved and hosts performances.
The organization also is trying to start up again with the Boys & Girls Club in Canyon Country, and looking for funding to do so.
The SCV Women and Men of Honor recently honored former Assemblyman Cameron Smyth and Margo Hudson for their local contributions.
“I think KHTS has been such a vital part of keeping Santa Clarita informed about Santa Clarita, and that’s what people in the SCV want,” Buttelman said. “They want to know about their community.”
