The recently released 2013 California Retail Survey ranked the city of Santa Clarita among the “Top 50 California Billion Dollar Retail Markets,” based on annual retail sales growth in the last five years.
Of the state’s 58 counties and 480 cities, Santa Clarita ranked 38 among the top 50 local markets with annual retail sales in excess of $1 billion. These 50 retail markets represent $141 billion and approximately 41 percent of California's annual retail sales.
Santa Clarita has seen its retail economy pick up in the last year as the local economy continues to pull out of the recession. The city’s latest numbers for calendar year 2012 show an increase of 7.2 percent in sales tax, compared to the 2011 calendar year.
"A strong retail environment is the foundation of a healthy economy and a resilient community,” commented Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar. “This report demonstrates the confidence Santa Clarita residents, business owners and retailers have in our community as well as the city’s commitment to building a strong economy and supporting more jobs.”
Santa Clarita’s reputation as a prominent retail market is a trend that business owners and retailers are watching. In the last year, the city has helped attract several new restaurants, businesses and two new dealerships to the Valencia Auto Center, which is Southern California’s largest auto mall and the city’s leading sales tax generator.
The 2013 California Retail Survey ranks the largest cities in California based on dollar volume, growth rates and sales per outlet. The publication is a respected source of market intelligence for corporate and government executives with analysis and rankings based on actual sales results from each of the 650,000 retailers in the state.
