One driver was arrested for outstanding arrest warrants and two were arrested for DUI with suspended licenses.
From 6 p.m. until 2 a.m., officers screened 1,305 vehicles, cited nine drivers for various vehicle code violations, sent five drivers to court who had revoked or suspended licenses and conducted two field sobriety tests.
The checkpoint is one of many that have been conducted in the Santa Clarita Valley.
DUI checkpoints, along with DUI enforcement, serve as a deterrent with the goal of removing alcohol and drug-impaired drivers from the streets.
They also serve to heighten awareness of the dangers of drunk driving.
The individuals arrested and convicted for DUI can expect jail time, vehicle storage or impound fees, license suspension, fines, fees, DUI classes, an increase in insurance rates and other expenses that can cost up to $1,000 or more.
DUIs can also affect the individual’s driving record and work and family life.
Sheriffs ask that the community keep the streets and highways safe by reporting drunk drivers. Funding for this and other DUI operations is a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration .
