The Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library sponsor the free program, in which readers of all ages are encouraged to explore food through books.
Participants set a reading goal for the summer, log books read and are eligible for prizes all summer long.
An assortment of food-themed programming is available at the Canyon Country, Valencia and Old Town Newhall Library branches. Cooking classes, craft projects, movie screenings, storytelling, group discussion, magicians and jugglers are all to be expected.
“Food and books inspire creativity and bring people together, so this summer’s reading program is a perfect pairing,” said Mayor Bob Kellar.
Participants will have programming appropriate to their age group. The children’s program includes presentations by the Wildlife Company, chefs and screenings of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Ratatouille .
Young adults will learn Bento Box basics, cupcake decorating, and enjoy mochas while discussing books at Barnes and Noble . Adults can discuss books, learn how to make sushi, and view presentations on healthy food.
“I hope residents of all ages will join us at their local library branch to enjoy this summer’s exciting programming,” said Kellar.
This year’s participants will also have the chance to vote for ducks, llamas and water buffalos as part of Heifer International ’s Read to Feed program. The Santa Clarita Library will send donations to the organization in proportions representing the most popular animals.
In 2012, Read to Feed raised $3,000 for the sustainable agricultural organization to purchase goats, chicks and bees for people in need around the world.
At the summer reading program’s end, participants are invited to celebrate the Family/Friends Eating and Storytelling (FEAST) Festival at Newhall Park on July 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The event will include food, performances and activities designed to bring family and friends together through storytelling.
Programming schedules for all age groups are available at scvsummerreading.com . Online registration begins June 10 and continues through July 27.
