Kindergarten through 11th grade students participated in the relay, walking a course around the lake and visiting different cancer awareness booths along the way, including a booth for each of the “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” All the booths were created by the students themselves, with games and activities to help teach leadership skills, good nutrition and the importance of rest, among other things.
Tenth grade student Paige Guarino, who helped at the nutrition booth, said that she enjoyed seeing the kids’ enthusiasm for the activities.
“We had a couple debates,” she said. “It was just really funny how involved the kids would get...”
Last year’s Recess Relay raised $4,100. This year, SCVi raised $3,500.
“Each learner was asked to make a goal of raising $5 a learner, and we have close to 700 learners,” said Cheryl Sena, 6th grade facilitator and program and events coordinator.
The students could also purchase raffle tickets during the event.
“Some of the kids even had money and wanted to contribute to the Recess Relay to help raise awareness about cancer and studies,” said Sydney Hild, a 10th grade student who helped sell the raffle tickets. “We raised a lot of money just from the auction itself.”
All money raised will support the Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society .
