Granola is a 10 year-old Golden Retriever currently suffering from crippling and painful arthritis of the joints. Duke is an 8 year-old Cane Corso that also suffers from painful inflammation issues. Doctors decided to use the new technology to treat Granola’s ailments as an alternative to expensive, invasive surgery.
Doctors of veterinary medicine now have a new tool to combat osteoarthritis and give hope to improving quality of life of canines, felines and equine patients. Adipose derived stem cell therapy allows for an affordable and minimally invasive procedure to harvest adult stem cells from animals who are seeking pain relief. Dr. Sandhu is one of the 450 nationwide progressive veterinarians to implement this procedure, which has been approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Stem cell treatments
Stem cells are powerful healing cells in a living body that can become other types of cells. There are many adult stem cells in fat tissue, however they are asleep. MediVet’s stem cell therapy allows a vet to isolate stem cells from an animal’s own fat tissue, wake them up, and re-inject them directly into damaged areas. In the case of arthritis, stem cells become new cartilage cells, thus reducing pain and increasing mobility.
Regenerative medicine procedures for orthopedic conditions have recently been performed on New York Yankees pitcher Bartolo Colon and golfer Tiger Woods. Plasma and stem cell treatments allow for a natural process to speed healing time reduce inflammation improving general well-being of the patients.
Now, with the help of MediVet America, animal owners seeking affordable relief for their pets have a new cutting edge option in regenerative medicine.
“These cells are going to migrate to wherever there’s inflammation,” said Jason Richardson, Sales Director for MediVet America. “So the animal’s range of motion (will improve) and their pain is going to decrease significantly.” Richardson said it takes between 48 hours to thirty days to determine how well the patient has responded to the treatment.
