John Gilbertson from The Master’s College was selected as the NAIA athlete of the week in track and field after his performance in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational.
Gilbertson ran the fastest time in the world this year in the 10K in 28 minutes, 30.35 seconds at the Stanford Invitational. Elroy Gelant of South Africa held the previous fastest time in the world in 2013 in 28 minutes, 50.24 seconds.
Gilbertson and The Master’s College men’s track and field team will compete in the Magnum Invitational at Cal State San Marcos on Saturday.
College of the Canyons freshman and Hart High graduate Tim White came in fifth place in the triple jump at the Stanford Invitational. He set a personal best with a jump of 49 feet, 11 inches as was second among athletes from community colleges at the national meet.
COC’s Anthony Fowler was 26th in the 400 in 49.53 seconds. He was one of 12 community college runners to compete in the race.
In college baseball, The Master’s College takes on Vanguard in a three-game series this weekend. The first game is this afternoon at 3.
The Master’s College is in first place in the Golden State Athletic Conference with a 2 ½ game lead over Concordia.
In high school track and field, Canyon’s Jeremy Kimmer is in 11th place in the decathlon after five events at the Arcadia Invitational meet.
He tied for first place in the high jump and was eighth in the long jump. The final five events of the decathlon begin today.
In the NHL, the Kings shut out the visiting Minnesota Wild, 3-0. Justin Williams scored two goals, Jeff Carter scored his 21st goal of the season and Jonathan Bernier recorded his first shutout of the year in goal.
Newly acquired defenseman Robyn Regehr assisted on the goal by Williams in the second period.
Next up for the Kings are the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday afternoon.
The Dodgers are home to start a weekend series with the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight. Zack Greinke will make his first start as a Dodger. The Pirates will send Jonathan Sanchez to the hill.
