The West Ranch boys basketball team needed a little fourth quarter magic to win its second-round playoff game against Huntington Beach.
The Wildcats won the CIF Southern Section Division 1A playoff game, 63-53, after blowing a 13-point lead in the third quarter.
With the game tied, 45-45, to start the fourth quarter, West Ranch held Huntington Beach to eight points in the final frame.
West Ranch plays Dana Point in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Ako Kaluna scored 21 points to lead West Ranch.
In other high school basketball playoff games, the Valencia boys lost to Aliso Niguel, 64-52, in the second round of the Division 1A playoffs. Riley Honaker scored 21 points for the Vikings.
In the high school soccer playoffs, the Valencia girls needed overtime and penalty kicks to advance to the quarterfinals in the Southern Section Division 2 bracket.
The Vikings beat Claremont, 5-4 on penalty kicks, after the two teams played to a scoreless draw in regulation and overtime.
Taylor Venegas scored the game-winning goal in the fifth round of penalty kicks. Valencia plays Sunny Hills, the No. 1 seed in the Division 2 playoffs, in the quarterfinals.
The Hart girls lost to Chino Hills, 3-1, and were eliminated from the Division 2 playoffs.
The Canyon girls were shut out, 1-0, by Long Beach Wilson and were also eliminated from the Division 2 playoffs.
The Santa Clarita Christian girls lost to Montebello, 1-0, and were eliminated from the Division 7 playoffs.
In high school baseball, West Ranch is ranked No. 9 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 preseason poll. The Wildcats reached the semifinals of the Division 1 playoffs last year, losing to Corona, 2-1. Corona went on to win the Division 1 championship.
West Ranch won the Foothill League championship last year and had a 20-9-1 overall record.
The Valencia baseball team is knocking on the door of the top 10. The Vikings are one of three teams to receive votes, but not enough to make the top 10.
The Santa Clarita Christian baseball team is ranked No. 7 in the Division 7 preseason poll. The Cardinals reached the quarterfinals of the playoffs last year.
In high school softball, Valencia is the only team from the Foothill League ranked in the preseason polls. The Vikings are No. 10 in the Southern Section Division 1 preseason poll.
Valencia shared second place in the Foothill League standings with Saugus last year. The Centurions are listed with Etiwanda just outside the top 10.
West Ranch, the reigning Foothill League champion, was not ranked in the preseason polls.
In college basketball, The Master’s College women beat Vanguard, 76-65, in a match-up of two teams in the top 25 in the NAIA.
The Lady Mustangs, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA, led 49-36 at halftime. Vanguard is ranked No. 7 in the NAIA.
Zoe Scott scored 16 points and hit five 3-pointers off the bench for The Master’s College.
The Master’s College men beat Vanguard, 75-67.
In the NHL, the Kings scored two goals in the third period and beat the Edmonton Oilers, 3-1. Jeff Carter scored the go-ahead goal for the Kings in the final minute of regulation. Jarrett Stoll added an empty-netter for the two-goal lead.
