Under this partnership, our hospitals will jointly operate the Pediatric Acute and Pediatric Intensive Care Units at Providence Tarzana, making a wider array of Children’s Hospital pediatric expertise available to families with children receiving care at Providence Tarzana. This new opportunity to enhance services for our community is in alignment with the mission and strategic direction of our organizations.
Working together, the expert-to-expert collaboration among the staff and physicians of the two hospitals will establish a higher standard of clinical care, as well as expand and enhance the scope of health care for children available in the Valley.
Our affiliation emerged from the far-reaching vision of PTMC physicians, who voiced a compelling community need to expand and enhance the scope of children’s services. This joint operation also helps fulfill Children’s Hospital’s ongoing objective to increase access to high quality pediatric health care services to families beyond its Los Angeles campus and to reach a new community of patients. We are pleased that this partnership also will enable Providence to extend our mission of outreach to many more families who previously did not have access to excellent and compassionate pediatric care.
All pediatric acute and pediatric intensive care units staff employed at our ministry will remain employees of PTMC. Fereshteh “Feri” Kiani, RN, a Children’s Hospital pediatric nurse manager, has joined PTMC to jointly oversee the 18-bed Pediatric Acute Unit and 7-bed Mozilo Family Foundation Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. This newly redesigned PICU is being funded in part by a donation from the Phyllis and Angelo R. Mozilo Family Foundation and is named for the Mozilo family. Under our new operating partnership, the medical staffs of both hospitals will work together to create the best possible model of care for children in the Valley.
Our affiliation builds upon a relationship between Providence and Children’s Hospital that was established in 2009 to provide the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) oncology program for patients at the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center.
The new program also meets the needs of pediatricians at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center and Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center who are excited about this opportunity to provide their patients with convenient access to these specialized pediatric services. Our dedicated pediatric transfer ambulance can swiftly shuttle young patients from our sister ministries to Providence Tarzana where they will receive comprehensive, family-centered medical care.
The PICU on the second floor at PTMC eventually will be relocated adjacent to the current pediatrics unit on the sixth floor and expanded to eight beds. The PICU expansion is a critical component to receiving California Children’s Services certification for this unit. In support of that expansion, PTMC has a dedicated capital campaign to raise funds for this important project.
As Providence Tarzana and Children’s Hospital move forward together, we are excited about the possibilities this partnership can bring to improving the health of children and offering our community access to the combined strength of our medical and clinical staffs. The growing population of approximately three million people in northern Los Angeles and Ventura counties will certainly benefit from higher levels of pediatric care delivered with the compassion and dedication to excellence that is the hallmark of both of our organizations.
The Providence Tarzana/Children’s Hospital affiliation truly marks a new era in pediatric care for the San Fernando Valley and surrounding communities, and we are proud to open 2013 with such an important advancement."
