Board Asked To Ban Campaign Contributions for Assessor Candidates [1]

Fri, 11/02/2012 - 11:30am  |  Perry Smith [2]

After the arrest of former County Assessor John Noguez for charges of corruption and misappropriation of campaign funds, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is being asked to ban campaign contributions at their meeting on Friday.

If passed, the ordinance will prevent tax agents from contributing to the campaigns of any County Assessor or candidates for Assessor. Previously, the properties represented by tax agents who contributed to Noguez’s campaign were assessed below fair market value, and the tax agent was given a portion of the returns.

The proposed ordinance reads that “there is need to reduce the opportunity for persons or organizations to use their financial strength to attempt to exercise control over candidates and the electoral process.”
